Photographing the edge of the universe. This is Quasar S5 0014+81. It is located 12.1 billion light years from Earth, just 1.4 billion light years after the creation of the universe. It is one of the most distant objects that humans can photograph. Its black hole has a mass of 40 billion solar masses, 6 times that of the M87 galaxy and 10,000 times that at the centre of our galaxy. It consumes 4000 suns in a year.
If the quasar were 280 light-years from Earth, it would give off as much energy per square metre as the Sun does to Earth, despite being 18 million times as far away.

Quasar 3C 273.3C 273 is a quasar located in the constellation Virgo. It is the first quasar to be identified and is the visually brightest quasar in the sky as seen from Earth, with an apparent optical magnitude of 12.9.
